OSTEOARTHRITIS

..

Osteoarthritis, sometimes called degenerative joint disease (DJD), i sthe most common form of arthritis. The chances of obtaining DJD increase with age. It is estimated that 60 percent of the population will develop DJD by the age of 60. The cause is unknown, athough it is known that DJD can develop as a result of trauma. The cartilage and bone underneath the cartilage are affected. The cartilage softens and the joint roughens and becomes pitted. The bone develops extra growth, usually at the margins or edges of the joint.

Signs and Symptoms

The most frequently affected joints are the hips, knees, low back and neck, as well as the middle and end joints of the fingers. Morning stiffness is common but typically resolves within 30-60 minutes. Pain generally increaseswith use of the joint and is relieved with rest. Joint enlargement is common. Creitis, or the feeling of "crunching" in the joint, is generally present. ADJD can generally be diagnosed with X-ray. Your physician will be able to give you details on this.

The role of exercise in DJD is to have ou engage in the proper type of therapuetic exercises to help prevent deformities, decrease stiffness, and maintain range of motion and strength. Modalities may be implemented to decrease pain. Instruction my be issued on how you can modify activites to prevent plaicing undue stress on joints. Use of assistive devices such as canes or walkers may also be advised.
